Things That Make Me Say Yeay + A Foggy Week Indeed

Friday, May 23, 2014

Another crazy part about our recent scare was that this week our backyard pool was completed.  Talk about bad timing.  When we came home from the hospital I just wanted to cover it up with dirt and make it all go away even though that is a totally unrealistic idea.  So...the first thing we did this week was get a baby safety gate installed all the way around.  Makes me feel much better about us all being outside and playing.  I feel like if you have a pool and small kids this is just so important.

Peach cobbler made with the juiciest peaches from my mom's tree.  I used hazelnut flour for the first time with this recipe and it could not have been more delicious!  I loosely based it off of my favorite Paleo cobbler recipe BUT if you do not care whatsoever about your desserts being healthy then I highly recommend this recipe.

The cutest little hot air mobile.  Some sweet baby out there needs this in their nursery.

I took the boys to a local science museum yesterday (it was cooler than it sounds ha) and they had a little segment where they did a bunch of science experiments with the kids.  This one used a mason jar filled with hot water, a block of dry ice and dish soap.  It made this fun bubbly explosion that my boys thought was the most amazing thing ever.

Peonies, which are my all time favorite pretty-ing up my nightstand.  Thank you Trader Joe's for always carrying the best flowers.

This was without a doubt a strange week.  I felt like I have been in a weird fog.  The day we came home from the hospital after Ronin's incident I thought I was okay...but it turns out I wasn't and I am still trying to deal with the wave of emotions that I feel and my fear that I have developed with my kids being around water and pools.  I also wanted to say thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart to all of you who shared the recent post with your friends and family.  You have no idea how much that means to me that YOU are helping spread awareness about Secondary Drowning and by doing that you are the one that may save a life and prevent this from happening to someone else.  So thank you again.

I am one of those who couldn't care less about healthy desserts and will be making the (un)healthy version of the peach cobbler mentioned above today :)

Thank you so much for sharing your last post. I have a 5 and 2 yr old girls and we live in our pool. I had no idea about secondary drowning and am grateful you shared your story. I shared it right away on FB and already it had been posted twice in my feed. You created a huge awareness. I am terribly sorry that happened to your sweet boy but thank you so much for sharing it on your blog! You and your family are adorable and I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog!

Talk about timing. However, I think it will help you get over the fear of them being around the water. That cobbler looks delicious!!

Thanks so much for your last post! I shared it :) I had never heard of secondary drowning - how scary! I would recommend getting into some counseling to deal with your emotions from the past week. It would probably only take a few sessions, and better to deal with it now than have repercussions from it later! I love counseling :)

I discovered you through multiple people sharing your second drowning story on Facebook. Thank you for informing others about this. I am going to be a new mama in August and I had no idea that could happen. Like Oprah says, "Luck is preparation meeting opportunity" so thank you for potentially saving others by sharing your story. Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks so much for sharing your story. Also, please give yourself a lot of grace in recovering from the scare. You quite possibly have some PTSD that you'll need to address. Don't hurry back to "normal" before you're ready. It was a terrifying ordeal and you should give yourself permission to take as long as you need to deal with it.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am a Swedish mother of three, 3, 5 and 7 year old, and your story showed up on Facebook. I had never heard of secondary drowning before, and this obviously is a very good thing to be aware of. I´m telling my husband and all my friends now the summer is approaching. So thank you again!

I'm so sorry you're still dealing with the aftermath of the incident. Describing yourself in this post reminded me of my mom. My younger brother jumped out of a shopping cart (20-something years ago, before they had seat belts in them) and had to have very serious emergency brain surgery, he almost died. After that, my mom worried a lot about letting him out of her sight, and every little thing he did - don't go near the edge! Stay next to me! But the point of me bringing this up is that he is alive and well, and nothing like that ever happened again (even though he was a wild energetic little boy) and he turned out wonderful. I can only imagine how hard it can be for you to not worry that something similar might happen again, but I'm just glad it's over now and everything turned out ok! My thoughts are with you to heal through this thing!

Thanks for sharing your story about your little boy. I clicked on a recipe on facebook and it took me to your site for the first time. My heart was racing the whole time reading your story. I obviously needed to hear it for whatever reason. For him to have such a warm, compassionate and wise mother is a gift. Remember the best part of childhood (and adulthood if you chose it) is to PLAY!! Have fun, run amuk, get muddy, wrestle with your siblings. Best wishes, Sharon, Glass House Mountains, Queensland, Australia xx

I'm so glad you shared your story. I was totally clueless. I shared with my mom group.
What a lovely nightstand - who makes it?

I wanted to say that I found your blog through two friends who have kids who posted the secondary drowning story on their Facebook pages. Even though you had a very traumatic experience, it does appear that your story is resonating with other moms and helping other people understand how to keep it from happening. Try to keep that in mind.

I have been following your blog for a couple years now. I just adore you and your ideas/ recipes;) I was so sad to read your account of Ronin's scare and how this must have affected you as a mom. My daughter had a VERY bad stroller accident - 5 years ago and it hurts to even write the words down today. The stroller got away from me and she wasn't buckled in and well she ended up with a brain injury. Everything healed, she is 100% happy, thriving little girl now, but the experience changed me as a person and as a mom. I may never fully heal. I will tell you this: the fear and trauma will never go away, but it DOES lessen over time. I made it my mission to turn the ultimate negative into a positive and try to educate every new parent I knew about being vigilant with stroller straps/ car seat combos. You are so lucky to have a following of moms and now with social media - it is a blessing your story can be heard because I guarantee it will make all of us moms take one extra cautious step around pools. I just had never heard of secondary drowning. So thank you. Anyway, sorry for the novel - ha! If I could tell you just one thing: try to be gentle with yourself. You are such a good momma - I can tell;) Looking back I wish I had gone to speak with a therapist after my daughter's accident - worked out some of the guilt, fear PTSD feelings I had held for a long time. It might help because Ronin will most likely never remember it, but you always will. Take care!

YEAY for the pool safety fence! I confess your story has me a bit leery of water with my 3 year old - but the information you shared can help other parents be vigilant in observing symptoms and taking action.

Can't wait to make some peach cobbler now. :)

Peach cobbler - looks amazing! Love your nightstand. Most importantly, sharing your story (which must have been very difficult to re-live and put down on paper) has created such awareness! I just shared on Facebook and have immediately gotten two re-posts. The most common reaction is "I didn't know about secondary drowning". Thanks to you, now we know...thank God your little one is safe and that you may prevent other families from experiencing a terrible, preventable tragedy!
