Most importantly, sharing your story (which must have been very difficult to re-live and put down on paper) has created such awareness! I just shared on Facebook and have immediately gotten two re-posts. The most common reaction is "I didn't know about secondary drowning". Thanks to you, now we know...thank God your little one is safe and that you may prevent other families from experiencing a terrible, preventable tragedy! I confess your story has me a bit leery of water with my 3 year old - but the information you shared can help other parents be vigilant in observing symptoms and taking action.

Can't wait to make some peach cobbler now. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8505544608932186547.post-72027563336650078612014-05-27T12:18:12.668-07:002014-05-27T12:18:12.668-07:00I have been following your blog for a couple years...I have been following your blog for a couple years now. I just adore you and your ideas/ recipes;) I was so sad to read your account of Ronin's scare and how this must have affected you as a mom. My daughter had a VERY bad stroller accident - 5 years ago and it hurts to even write the words down today. The stroller got away from me and she wasn't buckled in and well she ended up with a brain injury. Everything healed, she is 100% happy, thriving little girl now, but the experience changed me as a person and as a mom. I may never fully heal. I will tell you this: the fear and trauma will never go away, but it DOES lessen over time. I made it my mission to turn the ultimate negative into a positive and try to educate every new parent I knew about being vigilant with stroller straps/ car seat combos. You are so lucky to have a following of moms and now with social media - it is a blessing your story can be heard because I guarantee it will make all of us moms take one extra cautious step around pools. I just had never heard of secondary drowning. So thank you. Anyway, sorry for the novel - ha! If I could tell you just one thing: try to be gentle with yourself. You are such a good momma - I can tell;) Looking back I wish I had gone to speak with a therapist after my daughter's accident - worked out some of the guilt, fear PTSD feelings I had held for a long time. It might help because Ronin will most likely never remember it, but you always will. Take care! Even though you had a very traumatic experience, it does appear that your story is resonating with other moms and helping other people understand how to keep it from happening. I clicked on a recipe on facebook and it took me to your site for the first time. My heart was racing the whole time reading your story. I obviously needed to hear it for whatever reason. For him to have such a warm, compassionate and wise mother is a gift. Remember the best part of childhood (and adulthood if you chose it) is to PLAY!! Describing yourself in this post reminded me of my mom. My younger brother jumped out of a shopping cart (20-something years ago, before they had seat belts in them) and had to have very serious emergency brain surgery, he almost died. After that, my mom worried a lot about letting him out of her sight, and every little thing he did - don't go near the edge! Stay next to me! But the point of me bringing this up is that he is alive and well, and nothing like that ever happened again (even though he was a wild energetic little boy) and he turned out wonderful. I can only imagine how hard it can be for you to not worry that something similar might happen again, but I'm just glad it's over now and everything turned out ok! My thoughts are with you to heal through this thing! Don't hurry back to "normal" before you're ready. I would recommend getting into some counseling to deal with your emotions from the past week. It would probably only take a few sessions, and better to deal with it now than have repercussions from it later!
