DIY Split End & Dry Hair Treatment

Monday, February 10, 2014

A few days ago I took a close up picture with Max and the first thing I noticed (other than my tired looking eyes) was that my hair looked super dry, yikes!  I have been color treating my hair (sounds better than saying bleaching) for years so it's not that big of a surprise, but that doesn't mean I can't try to help out my poor strands.

I am a huge fan of coconut oil and decided to give this age old remedy a try, with a little added invigorating peppermint oil twist.

UM WOW! This was awesome.  After I washed it out my hair looked healthy, silky (not greasy) and hydrated.  I was so impressed with this super simple treatment and 3 days later my hair still looks and feels great.

What you will need:
Directions:
  1. Scoop out a good amount of coconut oil (I used about a tsp but my hair is short).
  2. Mix the coconut oil with the peppermint oil and apply to your hair really working it into the scalp and down through the ends.
  3. If your hair is long twist it up into a bun.  Cover your hair with a shower cap or a damp (clean) towel.
  4. Let the treatment sit for 30 minutes.
  5. Shampoo and condition in the shower to make sure you get all of the coconut oil out.
  6. Blow dry and style like you normally would.  You will be amazed at how soft and beautiful your hair looks and feels!
If you try this, or have tried this I would love to hear your thoughts!

I also add lavender oil to mine to help with dry scalp/flakes, plus it smells wonderful :)

Oh, the peppermint oil must smell so yummy with the coconut! I haven't tried that, but I do mix the coconut oil and jojoba oil (from traders) together and do this about once a week. A trick I learned is to apply the oils and let them sit for about 30-45 mins and then blow dry BEFORE you go into the shower so the cuticles in your hair expand. Then, jump in the shower and let it air dry!

I've done just coconut oil before but adding peppermint oil sounds awesome!

I'll bet that smells amazing too! I just started coloring my hair and I've noticed the ends are more dry than normal. I've been using more set angler at the ends and some lotion which seems to be helping but a good dose of coconut oil could be just the thing my hair needs. Great idea! I'm glad it worked for you.

do u have to use the peppermint? can u use just the coconut oil by it self?

Unknown said...

my girlfriend wants to know if u could just use the coconut oil alone?? she has allergy problems with scents

Andrew- You do not have to use the peppermint oil :)

This sounds great! So many things that I have tried leave me with dead hair, not to mention embarrassed, because it looks so greasy afterwards. I blow-dry and straighten my color treated hair every day, so it needs a pick me up =)

Oh great idea Lindsay! I have a tub of coconut oil sitting just in the bathroom. Also have one in the kitchen haha. And I use on my face every night...but now will definitely try it out on my hair! Thanks for the tip!

I used coconut oil, 4 drops of rosemary oil and 2 drops of tea tree oil, amazing results

I use the coconut oil and I make a Rosemary Rose Water Spray myself that I use on Shampooed Hair that helps it grow too. You might want to try Chamomile for Blonde Hair though as it helps bring out the blonde while Rosemary is good for Brunettes and Redheads Especially. Natural Care is best!!

Do you have a remedy for dry scalp also?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

My hair gets dry because I flatiron it most days, so this is exactly what I need! And I actually have both of these things which is so rare for me with your beauty tip posts! I'm going to try it out :)

Cheryl Culver How do you make your rosemary rose water spray this sounds interesting?

I do a mix of coconut oil, coconut milk and olive oil. I have to make sure it does not touch my scalp or it gets greasy.

I do have to say...it doean't treat the split ends entirely...if you really want super healthy hair, cut the split ends of and then do this treatment twice a week (when washing) and you will not get split ends..or maybe after a very long time you will get some.

And if you are in a hurry...even 5 minutes of soaking it in your hair does wonders!

I've never used coconut oil for my hair but I'm going to try it after reading this. Another suggestion is to ask your hair for "olaplex" if you get it colored often; it prevents breakage and damage from the bleach.
