Skin Care Tip of The Week: Treating Acne Breakouts With Turmeric

Monday, January 13, 2014

Random acne breakout's can put a real damper on your otherwise good face day.  The problem with most over the counter spot acne treatments is that they tend to be very drying, which in turn can irritate your skin.

I have previously mentioned the amazing benefits of turmeric powder for anti-aging as well as adding it to your diet as a super food but today I am going to share a simple way to incorporate it into your skin care regime if you are having breakouts.

Turmeric powder is able to fight acne head on because of its potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.  It is soothing and non irritating, which makes it the perfect ingredient to help stop those pesky breakouts before they become a real pain in the ass.

All you will need to make an all natural turmeric acne spot treatment is turmeric powder and water!

What to do:
  1. Mix a tiny bit of turmeric powder with a few drops of water until you have a paste.
  2. Apply to the broken out area with clean hands.
  3. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Gently rinse off (do not use a washcloth as this could irritate the breakout).
  5. Repeat this process daily until the redness and acne breakout is gone.
Hope you enjoyed this super simple little tip and if you do try this please come back and let me know about your experience.

My experience with turmeric on the skin is the turmeric turns skin yellow.
Have you had this issue?

If you are very fair, it may tint your skin temporarily. That is why I do not recommend using it as a full face mask, just a spot treatment.

Completely random, but you should bring back your Thrift Store Finds series. As another thrift store and flea market lover, I love to see what others are finding...and sometimes cry that they found it first ;) LOVE the blog!

I tried this today and it really did work to reduce the redness and inflammation of my spots! Yay! But... it did tinge my skin a bit yellow. I'll be doing it at night from now on so I don't have to put any concealer on after.
Thanks, Lindsay, for posting home skin care treatments that *actually* work! Your blog is the only internet resource I trust for home skin care and so many things you've posted have changed my regimen for the better :)

Yep,totally agree.
I am an Indian by origin (Asian-Indian) and turmeric is a staple in my mother's cooking .A pinch of that in every curry she makes and it taste good too.We also use it in our face masks all the time, the only disadvantage is it leaves a little bit of a yellow stain on the skin and on the fingers for a while.
Turmeric in a paste form wards off ants and other bugs.Hope this helps!

Hi Lindsay! I LOVE your skin care recipes and tips! I am looking for a good daily facial cleanser. I prefer DIY, but that's not totally necessary. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I can't believe someone would put a strong dye plant on their face. It may be effective but you'll end up with yellow dots all over your face. Internal use of turmeric yes. On the face no.
