Baked Apple Chips

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

I am totally guilty of snooping in other peoples carts at the grocery store. I want to know what other people are getting. What if I'm missing out on something! Saturday (after my super muddy FUN mud run and 5 showers later) we went to the grocery store and the lady in line ahead of us had a bag of baked apple chips in her cart. YUMMMers.

I thought these would probably not be that complicated to make myself...I also figured they would taste better warm and fresh out of the oven. I was right. Love it when that happens ;) So that is where this inspiration for this recipe came from...an unknown lady's shopping cart.

What you will need:
  • 2 apples
  • Cinnamon
Directions:
  • Remove apple core. I most likely did this wrong since half of the apple was missing when I removed it but you get the idea.
  • Thinly slice the entire apple.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place apple slices on it.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Bake at 275 degrees for two hours. At the end of hour one flip them over so they bake evenly.

* UPDATE: Check on them at the hour mark and every 30 minutes after that. Once they look nice and crispy take them out. :)

These were SO good!! The perfect healthy treat! I have a feeling these will be a a weekly must have once fall is in full swing...plus they made my house smell delicious...

I love apple chips, but every time I've tried making them myself I can't get them remotely crunchy. Were yours on the crunchy side or simply dehydrated? They taste good either way, but I like the crunch.

This sounds amazing! We love apples around here AND cinnamon, so very good combination. :) Nothing better to get into the 'fall' spirit. :)

soo yum!! i am trying this soon! thanks girl.

cool, I am gonna show my mom :)

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Andrea- The ones that were thinner were crunchy..the thicker ones had more of a dehydrated texture. Both good though! Next time I think I will bake them a little longer at a higher temp to give them more crunch :)

Oh yummo Lindsay! How nice do they sound? You know, I have a dehydrator and have been dying to use it. I might try that. A touch of cinnamon. Looking forward to summer and an abundance of stone fruit. I'll get the dehydrator fired up but in the meantime, I'll give this crisps a go. Great idea!

We have tool to remove the core of the apple and not as much would be wasted as with a knife. We use it when we make baked apples and could be used for apple chips.

Half of mine are looking great and crisping up nicely, the other half are turning dark brown and are still "chewy", am i missing something?!

sunnymum said...

Thanks for the inspiration! Not sure if I burned my batch or just sprinkled too much cinnamon (or both!). Mine taste like wood crisps, but the kids are still eating them like crazy. Going to pick more apples to try again!

Janelle said...

What kind of apples did you use, and how thinly did you slice them? I tried this tonight with a couple of MacIntoshes, and after an hour, they were seriously crustified to the pan and smelled half-burnt. I forgot the parchment paper, but I wouldn't think it would make THAT huge of a difference.

I used a mandolin to slice thin and didn't bother to core them at all. The seeds just fall out while slicing. They're baking as we speak. Thanks for the inspiration!

I found your blog via pinterest. I made these and they are so delicious, I've started making a big batch once a week so I can snack on them for several days... although, they usually only last like like 48 hours.

kbalke said...

Thanks for posting! I just made these via Pinterest and I am terrible at coring apples, so I just sliced them whole and then took a 1 inch frosting tip and punched out the core using the bottom of the tip. Worked great! Now I cannot wait to taste them in 2 hours!

beckykid said...

I don't know if I can wait 2 hours to eat these LOL. Thanks for the idea!

I just stumbled upon recipe via Pinterest and decided I had to try it right away. I will be honest and say that yes, I do sell Pampered Chef (in Canada) but I gotta say that the Pampered Chef's Cook's Corer removes exactly the right amount in the middle. Better yet, we just came out with a Microwave Potato Chip Maker and I did these in the microwave in about 9 mins!! Perfect!! And so delish! I don't want to overstep and put my website here but if you'd like more info on trying either of these products, let me know and I'll send my website. Just thought it might really help some of you who are obviously LOVING these too! Cheers!

Jenn said...

These look amazing! I'm sure we'd polish them off in an evening, but if not do you know how long they keep for? Thanks! Jenn

I tried making these and most of them turned out burnt (even though i took them out 30 min EARLY because they were getting brown) Any suggestions? Also, what kind of Apples did you use? :)

Anonymous said...

Mine were burnt after an hour :( Maybe I cut them too thin?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

If they burned try reducing the bake temp next time. Also make sure your using a large type of apple. Hope that helps! :)

Lauren said...

I also burned my first batch but figured it out with my second pan- really delicious and satisfied my sweet tooth after dinner :)

ishwishdish said...

Just want to add my experience for those who would like tips from someone who has tried this. I cut my apples on a mandolin (and my finger, yikes!) so they were nice and thin. I used convection at 250 degrees for an hour and 15 minutes. I noticed that they were still a bit bendy but as soon as they cooled they crisped right up. I also used cinnamon sugar and I liked them so much. Definitely reminded me of the bagged apple crisps. Hope that helps!

Sounds yummy, but too much energy used to make them (gas) (electric) stove....not the human kind

I love this idea and just happen to have 19lbs of pink ladies from my co-op. How would you store these? Are they dried enough that they can be kept on the shelf or would they need to be refrigerated/frozen?

i just sliced up an apple and put them in the oven! :)) great idea! I cant wait to taste them! thanks!

Sprinkling Jello powder on the apples is delicious too. My favorite is strawberry jello.

Kristin said...

Tried these tonight! Thanks for the inspiration!

melaulau said...

I also used a mandolin to slice the apples, which worked out nicely. And, I used some older apples that we wouldn't have otherwise eaten, so I was glad they didn't go to waste! (we're not big on applesauce). My kids didn't know the difference and loved them =D ***But, Anyone know how to store them? After putting them in an air-tight container overnight, they got soggy. =(

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Melaulau- These are best when eaten right away. I would not suggest storing them as you might get that soggy effect like you mentioned.

Thanks for the recipe! I tried to make them today and they were a big fail- how thick did you cut your apples? I think I may have made mine too thin so they got crunchy very quickly. Will try again!

Thanks,

These look like they would be a great snack to keep on hand. Do you know how long they stay good if put in a ziploc bag of tupperware?

Anonymous said...

YUM!!! I am going to make these RIGHT NOW.

Unknown said...

I'm baking a batch of these right now after buying some local Honey Crisp Apples. I found that if you slice the apples with a small mandolin/slicer, coring them is unnecessary. The little seed bits pop right out and you don't lose as much of the apple.

How many servings does this recipe make? Also how would you recommend storing them?

Anonymous said...

If you have one of those slicers (Mandoline) you do 'not' have to core the apple. The seeds will just fall out and it makes a pretty star center.

Anonymous said...

would they stick to the pan with out the paper

Melds said...

I love apple chips, so simple to make. thanks.

Anonymous said...

i did this and at the hour mark to flip them over... they were completely burnt.

Anonymous said...

Can you use any apples? I like granny smith apples only

Mona said...

I tried it and I am absolutely in love with these! Amazing! Love the taste of cinnamon on the apples!

Anonymous said...

These end up being more chewy than crunchy like the freeze dried ones, but still taste good.

Anonymous said...

What kind of apples did you use?

Unknown said...

I just tried these last night, but I'll have to make some changes the next time I make them. I put them in the oven and set a timer for 1hr to flip the slices. When the timer went off and I took them out, they were already starting to burn. They weren't too bad as they were crispy, but I couldn't get past the slightly burned taste. My boyfriend on the other hand still liked them and ate them all. I'll definitely try it again but I'll keep a closer eye on them to get the right timing. I'm thinking maybe 30 minutes would be enough. I was satisfied that they were crunchy, tho. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

Anonymous said...

Can i use microwave oven to do this? i dont have baking oven.

Anonymous said...

Ok, these are awesome however I made a few tweaks. I sprayed my parchment paper and I used splenda and cinnamon on them. The ones I didn't have room for I mixed with Ricotta cheese and it was awesome. I have a major sweet tooth, but I eat basically Carb free, so when I eat my sugars I really watch them. What a fun treat and so much cheaper then buying them in the stores. I used a Mandolin as well. Perfect slices.

Unknown said...

After I burned the apples yesterday, I thoght maybe you meant 275 degrees Fahrenheit instead of Celcius :)

Unknown said...

So I didn't core the apple - just slice it up in the mandolin - pretty star shape in the middle where the seeds are. They were yum.

Anonymous said...

How many slices make a serving size per person ?

Unknown said...

I can't wait to try this recipe, too! Yummy for both hubby and I, but on a side note our Vet said Dog Treats are like feeding your doggie Snickers Bars; unhealthy and LOADED with empty calories.
