How Personal Should a Personal Blog Really Be?

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

How personal and transparent should I be here and how much should I really share? This is the one question that I ask myself almost every time I go to write a family or personal post...and the longer I blog the more I question it.  In the beginning of my blogging journey I shared pretty much everything (maybe too much).  Now that I have been blogging for almost 5 years and my audience has grown, I tend to hesitate more when it comes to sharing but I would love to hear from my readers what you like to read.  Plain and simple.

Do you like reading about my personal life and my journey/trials as a mom? Or should I save that more for Instagram, where I have decided to make it less of a blog promoting space and more of a personal space.

I would love to hear your opinion, whether you are for the personal/family posts or not.

And that is all for today :)

I hear you, I struggle with the same thing. But I like that I can keep a somewhat digital memory of our years and I also like reading the same type of blogs.

I've been reading your blog for 3+ years and really enjoy your transparentness (is that a word?). I feel like many blogs can be too idealized..not enough real life and that's one of the things I really love about yours. I've never thought "Oh that was TMI" because I appreciate somebody putting it out there to either help someone or if I can't relate I'm sure I will sometime down the line ;) You have a good balance of recipes, health/beauty, real life, mom stories...i love it all! xx

Good morning! I have had very similar thoughts myself in regards to my own blog and have decided that we all are humans and all have personal lives similar to each other with trials and tribulations, ups and down which does not make anything we write extraordinary. I have also learned that I get a lot of support and advice from people who have been through similar things in life which only further manifest the fact that personal is nothing strange. Also, as a blogger we have to decide who our desired audience are. In my case it is my friends and family all over the world and I blog so they can follow our life, and thus there will be tons of personal posts on my blog. IN the end it is important to feel comfortable with what you write. Have a lovely dag and blog on! Kind regards, Anneli

Hello - I have read your blog since the beginning - and I have really, really enjoyed all of it. I especially appreciate your sincerity and honesty - I have learned so much about beauty, and bought many things you have recommended simply because you have recommended them - and I've never been disappointed. You were the reason I finally sought help for my complexion, and oh how I've enjoyed your posts about home, decorating and etc. It is an honour to me that you chose to share with us - and I, with my family, have benefitted because you've been there. I really appreciate your candor and your honesty - I spread the word all over about the 'secondary drowning' (thank goodness that's over) - and have shared so many ideas with others because of your blog. I look forward to it and hope you will continue to be you - because you are great. Thanks! Nena in Wyoming.

I love reading about your family and other little tidbits about your life.... but the world is full of crazy people...Personally I would be more reluctant to post personal things anywhere on the Internet....I cook just about every recipe you put out and use your oil cleanse recipe and facial toner daily! I love your blog just as it is BUT understand totally if you are wanting to back off from family sharing....Go with your instincts ALWAYS!! This is the only blog I read religiously...always sweet and to the point and I love that!

Love hearing about your personal life and personal experiences! It's often very helpful and just makes you/the blog author seem more relatable.

I, too, enjoy reading about your real life mom/family details. Your Ronin is the same age as my Joey and I think when they were born was when I found your blog. I like your healthy recipes and beauty recs as well. What I really like about your blog is that you haven't completely sold out, like so many of my former favorite reads -- where every post has turned into a "look at what I bought! Use my affiliate links to buy it and make me money!". You're one of the few good ones left ;-) I vote you keep writing what you've been writing and share as much as you feel comfortable/safe doing.

I think it's your own decision as to how much and what you share on your blog. I personally, just deleted my own blog because I didn't like how much information was on it. I work in health care and I worried that some way, some how one of my former patients would eventually be able to "find" me. I never mentioned my name or my children's names but there was information on it that could pin point where I lived. Anyways, I chose that I didn't feel comfortable sharing that with the world anymore.

I will tell you that I have followed your blog now for a few years because your two boys are pretty much the same age as my sons (E is 4 and Q is 2.5). I don't have any friends or family who have boys the same age so blogs like yours are informative/encouraging/enlightening on how you manage the "chaos" and joy of raising small boys (because really, being a mother of 2 young boys is very different than 2 girls or even a boy and a girl).

I think each person is totally different. I would just ask yourself WHY you want to blog and that should answer your question about what to share. If it's to document your life, then share more, etc

I've been sharing our journey with infertility lately which is so personal. But i've found that it's been a huge release for me and i've made so many awesome friends along the way who are praying/thinking of us. People have also contacted me in sharing how encouraged they are to read about my experience. I love reading about other mama's personal lives. Makes me feel normal. ;)

I like reading blogs to get to know the people behind them. So yes, keep the good stuff!

I enjoy reading personal posts! That being said, I'm always careful to only post personal stories that I'm okay with everyone reading. I choose my words carefully and leave out identifiable Information for safety.

You read my post about my kid shitting in the neighbors driveway. Clearly I have no blogging filter. I like the ugly truth. Makes the blogger human.

I like personal blogs better than professional ones, however being in a relationship with someone in Law Enforcement I am very careful about what I post and I have code names for him and his son and I do not show his son's face. Some think I am paranoid by doing this but when you run into past criminals at Costco that is 3 blocks from your home you can never be too careful.

I love your blog because it is real. Enough said!

I think you have a great balance right now! I just love your blog because it is so inspiring to me to take care of myself, eat healthy, and do the things that I love. But you also keep it real and are not "too perfect" like a lot of other blogs/ instagram try to appear to be.:)
