Applying your skin care products in the correct order is very important. Not only will this help ensure that they are working like they are supposed to, but you will get way more out of your products and see a greater result when you apply them in the proper order.

A good way to remember the correct order of skin care products is to start with the lightest and end with the heaviest.

Step one: cleanser
This one is a no brainier but you always want to start with washing your face.

Step two: exfoliant
Exfoliating your skin 3-4 times a week is recommended to help keep dry dead skin cells at bay.

Step three: toner
Using a toner is not necessary if you are using a good ph balanced cleaner. If you do like the feeling of a toner this is when you would use it.

Step four: serum
Applying a serum first will help enhance the active ingredients, making it a much more effective product.

Step five: eye cream
Most people are unsure when exactly to apply an eye cream, but if you do use one this is when you would gently apply it.

Step six: moisturizer
You can always combine your moisturizer with your sunscreen.

Step seven: sunscreen
So important! Never leave the house without putting SPF on your skin.

If you have any other questions regarding the correct application of skin care products feel free to leave them in the comment section and I will be happy to answer below.

sometimes I'm so lazy I mix my moisturizer and spf together, or use toner to rinse off the last of my cleanser. lazy beauty blogger :P

These are so great! Thanks for the tips. How do you feel about having a sunscreen in a moisturizer? And do you have a preference on a toner? Just curious. Thanks friend!

Lindsay, I have always cleansed my face really well prior to bedtime. Do I need to use a cleanser again in the morning or can I go on to the next step? Thanks for the tips!

That just seems like to many steps! But I do most of them anyway...LOL!

Lindsay- A moisturizer + a sunscreen is always a good thing :) As far as toners go a few I like are Boscia Clear Complexion Tonic, Murad Essential- C Toner and Kate Somerville Clarifying Toner

Simply LKJ- No you do not need to wash again unless you have oily/acneic skin.

I always do everything in the wrong order. Probably explains a few things about my skin. Ha. Hope you had a nice weekend, so cool that you guys were in San Diego. Kind of crappy weather unfortunately. Hope you had success at IKEA! :)

So good to know. I've always put my eye cream on after everything else. Also, the exfoliant I use is a toner....it's an Aveda botanicals exfoliant. I hope this is good bc I love it a lot. :) as always, thanks for sharing!

I thought I was the only one who could never remember what order to do it in! I can never remember if the serum or toner goes first, and I had no clue when to do my eye cream. I'm excited to finally be able to do everything when I'm supposed to ha - it's the little things :)

Lindsay what is serum? Is this a name for something else, or am I really 31 years old and am just hearing about something i could/should be putting on my face?
Do you have any reccomendations for eye cream?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

C3- a serum is a product designed to target specific areas of concern such as pigmentation, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. It is usually a potent product with active ingredients such as Vitamin C and lightening/brightening properties. Totally up to you if you want to incorporate it into your skincare regime. Most of the good ones are pretty pricey but I say worth it.

A great eye cream is http://www.skinmedix.com/products/100%25-Pure-Organic-Coffee-Bean-Caffeine-Eye-Cream.html?gclid=CNCnu7GC5a4CFQ0FRQodAB0Xvw

I remember you recommended ACV for skin. Would this be used like a toner or do you use it by itself? Morning or night?

C3 said...

Thank you! I just ordered the eye cream!

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Melisa- Great question! ACV would only be used at night and yes you would use it as a toner. You mentioned your skin is sensitive in a previous post so ACV may be a little too harsh for your skin. You may want to try the rose hip toner I did a post on a little while back .
