Skin Care Tip of the Week *Common Face Washing Mistakes*

Monday, August 8, 2011

Excessive cleansing- Cleansing your skin more than twice a day can strip your skin of its natural oils and can actually cause your skin to produce MORE oil. Even if you are prone to breakouts or or have super oily skin you should still only wash your face morning and night.

Picking a cleanser that smells the best- Cleansers that are full of unnatural or synthetic fragrance can irritate you skin and cause a whole host of problems. Its a good idea to read the back and see where exactly the fragrance comes from.

Not leaving the cleanser on your skin long enough
- In order for a cleanser to properly work it needs to be left on the skin for about 30-45 seconds before it is rinsed off.

Washing your face before using your shampoo and conditioner
- If you are prone to breakouts around your hair line it is most likely due to the fact that your shampoo or conditioner was not fully rinsed off. In order to help prevent hair line breakouts its always best to wash your face AFTER washing your hair.

Washing your face in cold water
- Yes cold water can wake you up but it will not open your pores which is important when washing your face because it allows for proper exfoliation. It is best to wash your face using warm (not hot) water.

So there you have it! A few tips that can give you better results when washing your face.

If you have any questions you can leave them in the comment section and I will be happy to answer

Good to know! I don't think I leave my cleanser on long enough so I'll have to make sure to do that. What facial cleanser(s) do you use??

I LOVE your tips!!

I also read recently that occasionally NOT washing your face before bed (just removing make up) is good for the skin. What do you think? True or false?

Great tips!! I've definitely always heard washing your face with cold water was better? But good to know it actually isnt!

Thank you, as always, for the skin tips! Oh, and I started the unfiltered apple cider vinegar regimen. Going well so far although I haven't convinced my husband it's good for him, yet.

Sherri-I have a few that I really like such Origins Checks and Balances, The Wonderbar, Bliss purifying cleanser and a cleanser by a professional line called Skin Fitness.

Jamie- Yes sometimes its great to let your skin replenish its natural oils but I would choose not washing in the morning over the night..just splash with water or toner in the morning.

Thank you for sharing. I have a habit of rinsing with cold water which causes my large pores to become larger.

I always was my face at the end of the shower...just for that reason. I do wash with warm water but is it good to end with a burst of cold to close your pores?

I never thought about washing my face AFTER my hair! Thanks for the great tips!

So good to know about washing my face with warm water! I normally use cold water all summer when it's so hot out but never realized it's not actually exfoliating my skin!

Jackie @ EatLove&Style said...

Thanks for the tips, I use the Clean and Clear pomegranate cleanser and I wash my face while I shower, so just once a day.

wonderful advice for washing face, didn't know I have to leave the facial wash for 30-45 secs. And wash my face after washing my hair, that's the best advice ever!

I know I have not been leaving my cleanser on long enough so thanks for the reminder! I also had heard before that when you dry your face after washing you just blot not rub with the towel? Any truth to that?

These are so good to know! Thank you.

I'm loving these tips, especially since I have had some recent break-out issues! I don't think I have been leaving my face wash on for long enough...maybe that will help a little!

By the way, I dont know if you saw my response comment...but yes I did dye my hair darker (although that pic. was a few weeks ago and it is already much lighter then I like!)

I think the way I worded this post may have been a little confusing..to clarify if you are washing your face in warm water you are doing it correctly :)

I'm not into washing my face, but I've read a few other mommy bloggers who love the castor-oil facial cleanse. If you add in a couple drops of high-quality frankincense, it helps all the more because it is a great skin toner.

Unknown said...

Hi Lindsay, I'm really enjoying your blog! Could you recommend a budget-friendly cleanser? (I have pretty normal/combination skin) I also often wonder about whether to go with a "conventional" brand cleanser or to go for a more "natural" product, from somewhere like Whole Foods, for example. I'd love to know your thoughts!

Jenna said...

Thanks so much for the tips - I am someone who needs some face washing motivation haha, I never exfoliate or anything, but def need to start!

i love your blog since i'm obsessed with... my face... is there a facial cleanser you'd recommend? i use cetaphil because it doesn't dry my face out causing it to produce more oil and thus acne

Domesblissity said...

Another great tip Lindsay. You know, I've never used normal soap on my face as well. Would that be right? I'm having a terrible time with my face (and skin in general) lately. It's a little bit to do with dry winter weather but a lot to do with being perimenopausal, I feel. I'm off to a naturopath tomorrow for a bit of advice.

I never realized Shampoo and Conditioner could cause breakouts... it makes sense! Thanks!

Facial cleansers I love and recommend are:

-Bliss-Purifying Cleanser (Acne)
-The Wonderbar (All Skin Types)
-Orgins- Checks and Balance (Oily/combination)
-Josie Maran Argan cleansing oil (All skin types)
-Boscia-Purifying cleansing gel (All skin types)

A Great moisturizer WITH suncreen is Neutrogena oil free moisture with SPF 15.

I also LOVE Josie Maran's Organic Argan Oil as a moisturizer. IT is amazing!! I may do a post on it but it is good for all skin types.

Anne- Its all about whats in the bottle as far as ingredients but I tend to lean more towards the natural preservative free cleansers...I did a post on what ingredients to avoid so you may want to check that out.

I hang out for this weekly post now and you haven't failed to disappoint! I SO don't leave my cleanser on long enough. I rub it on and wash it off within 15 seconds easily. Not anymore. Thanks again Lindsay :)

A timely post as I just ran out of cleanser (this wonderful smelling organic lavender cream from France) and the spa I purchased it from is gone! I love Fresh Soy Face wash and think I will go back to it.

I was also told (by above spa) that it's best to "push" your moisturizer and cleanser into your face rather than the violent rub. Gently pushing it into your skin penetrates better and doesn't pull. What do you think about this?

Ahhhh...I need a facial!

I seem to remember reading somewhere to wash your face with warm water to open up/cleanse your pores, but to then splash it with cold water to close them. I've been trying it and it seems to work for me.

Neat tips!

True, excessive cleaning or washing your face can cause further damage to your skin. And if you're using the wrong soap, your skin can turn dry. Thank you for the informative skin care reviews Delighted Momma!

Actually, it's good to rinse your face with cold water. First, you should use warm water to wash your face. After using warm water to rinse off cleanser, you should switch to cold water. the warm water first opens your pores, the cleanser take the dirt away, then the cold water closes and tighten your pores. The cold water acts as a toner of some sort.

Great tip about not washing your face until after shampooing. A big culprit for my back acne was from residue from my conditioner; making sure to re-rinse it after washing my hair has made my skin much clearer.
