Skin Care Tip of the Week *3 foods that may be causing skin problems*

Monday, January 9, 2012

Every esthetician has their own opinion about whether or not food causes acne. While I do not believe that eating a piece of chocolate will cause you to break out into a pimply mess, I do believe that everything you eat impacts your skin one way or another. Eating too much of a certain food can cause blockage in your digestive tract as well as other internal issues and this in turn can cause you to break out.

I am not suggesting you stop eating or drinking these foods altogether (I LOVE a good milk latte) I am just saying if you are having trouble with your skin you may want to think about cutting back on these.

3 foods that may be causing skin problems

Peanuts- Peanuts are actually legumes (a plant that bares its fruit in a pod) not a nut. Unfortunately peanuts are very prone to mold and fungi and that is why so many people have allergic reactions to them. I also personally notice every time I indulge in one too many peanuts I break out like clockwork. Even though peanut butter is SO good a better choice for your body and your skin is almond butter.

Cows Milk- Milk is a mucus forming food that overtime can build up along the walls of your intestines. This can make you tired, cause acne and other non beautifying things that you most likely want to avoid. A better choice for everyday consumption is almond milk (my favorite), coconut milk and hemp milk.

Processed Foods- I am sure you are aware that most chips and processed foods are not healthy for you. The reason for this is because they are loaded with chemicals that give them that cheesy or artificial flavor and bright coloring. Your body is not meant to consume mass amounts of these foods and when you do your digestive tract has to work extra hard just to digest them. This in turn can cause your skin to show signs of distress, aging and acne.

If you would like to learn more about beautifying foods and foods you should avoid for better health and skin I highly suggest The Beauty Detox Solution.

Thanks for sharing :) I think a lot of people get the whole peanuts/nuts thing confused thinking that they are good for you like almonds.

That's so interesting. I had no idea that was why people suffered so many allergies from peanuts. Good to know!

Mucus. oh man, that's such a gross word. I try to get the most watered down milk possible. I've pretty much stopped drinking it though because I only use it with cereal and I've cut cereal out of my diet. Idk if my grocery store has almond milk…I bet they do though.

Thanks for sharing!! Always love a little education. :)

I'm a thirty something with recurring acne! I thought I left it behind in my teens, but no such luck. Thanks for sharing. I had no idea that peanuts and milk were bad for your skin. Is it just peanuts or all nuts?!

Life Happens- nuts are great for your skin! As I mentioned above peanuts are not actually a nut they are a legume. Since peanuts are so prone to mold and fungi its best to not eat them in abundance.

Oh how interesting! I've been eating more peanuts lately and breaking out more but I didn't connect the two because I'm eating, raw, unsalted peanuts (so I thought they were 100% healthy). Thanks!!!

What a great post! I've already cut out dairy, but I think I'll have to do the same with peanuts. I actually like almond butter better anyways :) I'm not sure if you've ever visited this site, but ohsheglows.com has some wonderful vegan recipes and she uses lots of almond milk and almond butter! Oh and I tried the coconut oil on the little one's cradle cap and this morning she was actually flake free! I was so excited...and I'm sure she was too :)

What would you recommend for getting rid of acne marks? I find that my face doesn't actually have that much acne....just a lot of red marks left over that last for months. Exfoliating has helped some, but not "enough."

Monika- A professional microdermabrasion treatment can really help and you may also want to try this diy mask/peel: http://www.delightedmomma.com/2011/07/skin-care-tip-of-week-diy-vitamin-c.html

Thanks! I'll give this a try. (I've used Derma E's microdermabrasion and that was great.)

I've been questioning for over a few months now whether or not my face is breaking out because of dairy. You wouldn't believe it if I told you how much milk per week I consume on my own! For awhile I drank soy milk but discontinued that for other health purposes. I may have to try out almond milk and see if this mess improves.

Wow...milk is so surprising to me!

oh so true that what you put in your body will impact your skin! and i totally think it's different for everyone. when i have a lot of sugar in my diet i break out! i did a yeast/sugar cleanse once and the difference was incredible.

Awesome post. I knew that these things were not good for you, but it was nice to be reminded about them and the reasons why.

Have you read "Living Beyond Organic"? Because it is a good book, and that is where I learned about this stuff. I highly recommend it. :)

Great post! I hit 25 and my skin changed. I have been struggling with it for the last 5 years and after 2 allergy tests, it was confirmed that I am intolerant to dairy. A life-changing confirmation, particularly for the woman obsessed with Afternoon Tea.

I stopped using products of 'problem skin' and switched to organic, natural products (Weleda, Kibio, Sanoflore - all found easily here in Europe), and in combination with removing dairy from my diet (almond and oat milk are great), my skin is on the mend.

Great post! If i may add that one simple tip to maintain youthful looking skin which often overlooked regimen that you can do to keep your skin have that youthful glow is to drink at least eight tall glasses of water. It's cheap and come handy lol!!!
