Skin Care Tip of the Week *DIY green clay mask"

Monday, June 13, 2011

If your skin is looking more oily and congested than normal it's time for a green clay detox mask!
Green clay is is an all natural organic material made up of essential minerals and decomposed kelp and seaweed.

It works by absorbing impurities and toxins from your skin as it hardens. It also promotes blood flow and leaves your skin feeling like just had the most amazing facial!

You may be thinking, "That's great... but since you are an esthetican you can get this stuff easily." Let me share a little secret with you...I get mine in bulk at the local natural market! So you can get it too!

Mix 1 tablespoon of green clay with a few drop of water to make a paste. Apply to your skin with a smooth brush. Let it harden on your skin for about 15-20 min. Rinse with warm water.

If you have oily skin I recommend using this at least three times per week. You can also use this mask as a spot treatment if you only breakout on occasion.

Amelia- I get mine at our local natural grocery store called Sprouts. If you have a natural grocery store around that sells loose leaf tea and herbs in bulk, check there. You can also order it from Amazon :)

Thanks for that Lindsay. I'll check out my local store. I could so do with a mask at the moment. My skin is very dry from the cold weather and warm air conditioning every where you go. It really needs a good treatment.

Thanks!

Great tip! I use a similar ready made clinique mask, but I'm sure this way is just as effective and 10x cheaper!

Thanks so much for the tip! I love home beauty remedies :)

I have very sensitive skin. Do you think my face will be able to handle this green clay mask?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Sherri Lynn-

You are so welcome! I would say no do not use it as a full mask if you have very sensitive skin. Since it is a clay mask it is very drying..so ONLY use if you have oily/acneic skin that is not overly sensitive. If you want to use it as a spot treatment for those times when you get the occasional breakout, do a skin patch test first. Place a small amount of the mask on your inner forearm for about 30 min...if you do not notice a reaction, go ahead and use it as a spot treatment only on your face. Hope that helps! :)

Ok thank you for the explanation! I'll do a test first and then use it for those annoying breakout spots :)

Thanks for reminding me to deep clean my skin. I've been getting soooo lazy lately with this.

Do you think it's not enough to exfoliate? Definitely use a mask at least weekly in your opinion?

Ronnie :)

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Ronnie- Your welcome! Good question! Exfoliating your skin is still very important to do. Depending on your skin type I usually suggest three times per week. Use the green clay mask only if you are oily/acneic and feel like you need a little extra help fighting the battle. If you fit in this category, yes three times per week. Hope I answered your question :)

I ordered the French Green Clay from Frontier via Amazon. $16.40/pound. My skin was radiant after the mask and looked a whole lot less tired! It reduced the look of the lines between my eyebrows and around my mouth. I did this last thing at night and applied a thin layer of organic coconut oil overnight. So glad I found this page - probably saved me a fortune :o)

where can i find a local natural supermarket in Socal? is there a particular store? I am in college, thus I would prefer to not pay for shipping

Hi there Lindsay,
Just discovered your wonderful blog, and even managed to find the green clay powder in the tiny organic shop in my neighborhood (I live in Israel).
I used it and I have to say - it's the best one I've tried yet! I'm 30 and my skin turned from oily to combined lately (which means my cheeks get dry but T-zone in full of black-heads...). This simple mask, unlike all the mysterious ingredients and perfume packed and sold by the fancy brands, gave me a clean skin and healthy glow! Love it!!!
Thank you so much!

What do u recommend for more dry than oily skin? I plan to try this mask on my nose and chin, but I definitely lean more toward dry skin.
Thanks!

Victoria Barmak said...

you can add a drop or two of tea tree oil. helps with blemishes due to its antibacterial properties.

Victoria Barmak said...

also, instead of water mix it with apple cider vinegar. ACV contains alphahydroxy and is an excellent exfoliant.

Hi! I stumbled upon your wonderful blog on Pinterest and am now hooked! I am looking to order green clay from Amazon. Do you have a suggestion for the best brand?

Unknown said...

Hi Lindsay. Which of your DIY masks do you recommend most for acne prone skin? I've tried the Vitamin C mask, I plan on keeping that in my skin routine. Next I am going to try the Pumpkin mask. But also interested in the green clay mask, aspirin mask and matcha tea mask. Is green clay with some ACV my best option? Thank you! Love all of your concoctions! Thank you for sharing :)

I love shopping at my natural food market, Au Naturel Market, but when I am patient and want a really great deal-I go to Ebay! There you can find all of your favorite essential 100% pure oils and all kinds of different clays incuding the french green clay and red clay, etc....

hi, thanks for the tips,,but where i can get grey clay in malaysia?i'm a student and spending too money will be the last thing i would do...thank you, im rafha

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Rafha- no idea, sorry!

Marisa said...

Will this cause any type of skin purging? Many clays, cause initial breakouts (or in my case tons of tiny bumps that look like a skin reaction). I've read great thinks about how great French green clay is for oil absorbing, but I don't want any breakouts to form.
