The sweetest story

Friday, January 6, 2012

This is not a typical Friday post for me but sometimes I like to switch things up a bit and this was too sweet not to share...

A thoughtful reader recently e-mailed me this picture of two parents who got insulin pump tattoos on their bellies to show their type 1 diabetic son that he is not alone and different. This totally made me cry.

I can relate to this because I remember when I was seven years old and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes I felt different from everyone else too. Although my parents did not get tattoos they did everything in their power to make me feel as normal as possible. I had a cool bright pink caboodle (remember those?) where I kept all my diabetic supplies, I went to diabetic camp every summer (so much fun) and I had a really nice custom made medic alert bracelet that made me feel like I was just wearing a pretty bracelet. They also always encouraged me to play sports and do everything else that other kids were doing.

No matter what life throws at you having supportive parents definitely makes things easier to get through.

You can read the full story here.

On a side note: It has been a crazy week around here. My poor little Max is so sick. It drives me NUTS when other Moms bring their snotty sick kids to the gym with them, so that's most likely where he caught it. Today we are headed to the Dr to hopefully get all fixed up!

DIY Heart Glitter Nail Polish

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

I know I know....Valentines Day is not for like a month and a half away...BUT one of my new years goals was to get organized and not procrastinate, so here is a little early inspiration.

Bottom line is you either love Valentine's Day or you don't. I love it and I love partaking in all the hallmarky-ness about it. I still remember being in grade school and trying to find the perfect Valentines that I would pass out to all my friends and hoping mayyybe that boy would send me one of those little candy telegram things....never happened ha!

To make your own Valentines Day inspired nail polish you will need:
  • Clear nail polish
  • Martha Stewart heart glitter
Empty out half the bottle of clear nail polish to make room for the heart glitter. Add a TON of heart glitter into the bottle. Shake it up and you're done! So easy.

Here is how it looks straight out of the bottle...

If you like a more uniformed look, paint a coat of clear nail polish, apply three hearts to each nail (two on pinky) and then top with one more coat of clear polish.

Have fun painting!

Skin Care Tip of the Week *When does makeup expire?*

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

I am more than guilty of keeping those few favorite eyeshadows and lip glosses longer than I should. I hate parting with awesome makeup...BUT keeping makeup after it has gone bad can cause all sorts of skin problems like acne and irritation.

Since not all makeup companies print an expiration date on their products I have included a guideline that will help you know when its time to toss your makeup.

Foundation- liquid foundation is a breading ground for bacteria, so once opened it should be used within 6 months. If you notice the smell start to change at any time toss it. This is usually the first sign that it has gone bad.

Mineral Powder- mineral powder is awesome! Since it contains no water or oil it has a much longer shelf life than foundation. As long as you don't get any water into your powder it can last up to two years.

Eyeliner- since eyeliner is constantly in contact with your sensitive eye area, bacteria is more likely to be present. If you are using a liquid eyeliner toss after 3-4 months. If you are using a pencil eyeliner and are diligent about keeping it sharpened (this removes some of the bacteria by keeping it fresh) you can keep it up to 5-6 months. Using an eyeliner once it has gone bad is a great way to get a not so fun eye infection.

Blush- if you are using a mineral based blush it can also last up to two years. Make sure you keep your blush brush (say that 10 times fast) dry. If water gets on your brush you risk getting bacteria into the blush which will shorten the shelf life.

Mascara- every time you dip the wand into the tube and onto your lashes..and back into the tube you are adding bacteria. To help limit the amount of air and bacteria into your mascara (and extend its shelf life) avoid pumping the wand in and out of the tube. Instead swirl the wand around the tube without adding extra air. It is really important to change mascara every 3 months.

Lip gloss- needs to be tossed after about 18 months.

Its also a good idea to clean your makeup brushes regularly to avoid spreading bacteria into your makeup.

DIY Geometric Necklace Pendant

Monday, January 2, 2012

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful time celebrating. I actually made it until midnight...I was pretty proud of myself :)
2012 is going to be amazing...I just know it! I want to kick off the new year with a fun DIY that I have been wearing recently.

What you will need:
  • 3 different colors of polymer clay
  • Some kind of roller (a large marker will also do the trick)
  • Razor blade
  • Cotton cord
  • Krazy glue
  • Toothpick or object to poke a hole in clay
Soften and condition the clay with your hands before starting. Use the roller to roll out a small flat piece. Do this with each color.

Carefully slice out 3 triangles. You are going to make the first one the largest and the two following smaller.

Poke a hole in the smallest of the 3 triangles. Place the triangles on a baking sheet and bake at 275 for 20 minutes.

Krazy glue the triangles on top of each other, staggering them a little bit.

Attach the necklace cord and have fun wearing! You can get creative and add more triangles and of course the color combinations are endless.

Top 10 Skin Care Tips Of 2011

A new years goal/resolution of mine is to take a step back from doing treatments and facials and focus more on teaching and expanding my skin care knowledge. I look forward to sharing more!

Boy or Girl? Plus the worst cake possibly ever made.

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

One thing you will NEVER see on my blog is a cake recipe. I might just be the worst cake baker ever. The one time I attempted to make a cake from scratch I completely failed. The recipe called for baking soda. We didn't have baking soda and I figured it was only a tiny amount so whats the big deal? Result= flat sad little cake that did not rise.

The second time I attempted to bake a cake (hello box mix) was for my husband's birthday last year. I forgot to grease the pan (picture evidence here). Result= pan cake. The cake and the pan became one.

Soooo I had big plans for the gender reveal cakes. I bought pre made cake mix. You cant mess up pre made cake mix...and I made sure I greased my little baking dishes. Result....

I forgot that cake rises. I filled each little dish to the tippy top with (blue...looks green) cake mix. Lava cake explosion everywhere! My poor little oven needs a good cleaning. Haha they were a disaster. So what to do what to do?

Put lots of sprinkles on it of course! I also did this wrong and did not wait until the cake was "cooled." The end result is a melting little biscuit and gravy looking cake.

The Grandparents obviously did not care :)

Our baby BOY is due June 8th!
